Healing Waters Wilderness Adventures (HWWA) is a nonprofit based in Sacramento and San Francisco, dedicated since 1996 to empowering, inspiring, and enriching the lives of individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, chronic illness, economic or social disadvantage through inclusive and transformative wilderness experiences
The organization offers whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and cabin retreats—designed to foster healing, community, and confidence in safe outdoor settings
Position Overview
HWWA seeks committed individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you'll provide strategic governance, financial oversight, program stewardship, and serve as an ambassador for our mission of healing and community-building through wilderness experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Governance & Strategy
Guide the organization’s strategic planning and mission alignment.
Participate actively in regular board meetings and committee work.
Fiduciary Oversight
Oversee financial health by approving annual budgets and monitoring performance.
Ensure transparency and accountability in financial practices.
Fundraising & Resource Mobilization
Make a meaningful personal donation annually.
Leverage your network to support fundraising efforts and sponsorship opportunities.
Program & Safety Stewardship
Understand and advocate for HWWA’s core programs—rafting, kayaking, winter excursions, and cabin trips.
Support maintaining HWWA’s strong safety record and inclusive approach
Ambassadorship & Community Engagement
Represent HWWA at community events, fundraisers, and outreach initiatives.
Cultivate partnerships with donors, sponsors, and aligned organizations.
Board Development
Qualifications
A deep commitment to HWWA’s mission and values.
Experience in nonprofit governance, fundraising, outdoor programming, healthcare, or related sectors is a plus.
Strong communicator who can collaborate authentically with diverse stakeholders.
Ability and willingness to provide time, energy, and financial support.
Lived experience with chronic illness, HIV/AIDS, LGBTQIA+, or underserved communities is especially valued—it brings powerful insight to our program design and outreach.
Time Commitment
Attend approximately 4–6 board meetings annually (in-person or virtual).
Engage in committee or project work as needed.
Estimated commitment: 3–6 hours per month, with flexibility during peak planning or fundraising periods.
