Can you tell me a little about Healing Waters as an organization?

Healing Waters is a tax-exempt 501c (3) non profit organization based in San Francisco. Our small administrative staff and our large pool of volunteers have been providing high quality wilderness experiences for people with AIDS since October of 1996. Read our history for more information about how we got started.

What do you do over the course of the trip?

Our typical trip is a two-day, one-night weekend trip. We leave  Saturday morning and return Sunday early evening.

Here is a sample itinerary of one of our raft trips:

Saturday

  • 7:00 AM -- Our San Francisco participants meet at 167 Fell Street and depart for Berkeley
  • 7:30 AM -- Our East Bay participants meet at the Cal Adventures/Berkeley Marina (directions below) & we all  leave for the river
  • 10:15 AM -- We arrive at the campground and setup camp
  • 11:00-5:30 PM -- We raft, have lunch, raft some more along the beautiful American river
  • 5:30 PM -- We get off the water and return to camp, have a homemade dinner and hang out by the campfire.  We'll often cook some S'mores for dessert!

Sunday

  • 8:00 AM -- Breakfast on the river, pack up camp, have a closing circle
  • 11:00 Look at our rafting photos and head back to the Bay Area

Are there physical restrictions on who can come?

The only physical requirement is that participants must be able to  hold onto a strap while in the boat. The boat will be jostled at times and participants need to have the strength to keep themselves in the boat. Participants are encouraged to paddle; however, participants that are unable to paddle are very, very welcome to join us as well.

What do I need to bring?

Healing Waters provides all of the group equipment to go rafting and camping. We provide life vests, paddles and boats as well as tents, sleeping pads and sleeping bags for accommodations.  We provide all food (except for lunch on the road coming back on Sunday) as well as transportation to and from the river.

Here's an example of what you would need to bring for one of our rafting trips:

  • Sun screen and sunglasses
  • A plastic water bottle (plastic Evian bottles work fine)
  • A swim suit to wear under the wetsuit
  • 2 pairs of shoes (including one pair that can get wet)
  • Dry clothes for the evenings and travel days
  • A towel and a flashlight
  • Insect repellent (optional) and personal toiletries
  • A warm jacket that repels rain, gloves and a warm hat (we have extras if you need these)
  • A wool sweater or synthetic top .(we have extras if you need these)
  • 2 pairs of wool socks to keep your feet warm while we raft (We have extra socks if you need them). Do not bring any cotton clothing that you plan to wear while rafting. Cotton does not insulate your body and will actually keep you cold when wet. We recommend tops and socks made of wool or synthetic materials (such as capeline or polypropylene).
  • A pillow
  • Pleasure reading and snacks that you like

How do I make a reservation?

Space on our trips is limited. Priority is given to people who have been diagnosed with AIDS (as opposed to being HIV+).  To sign up for trips for people with HIV and AIDS, click here.  To sign up for trips open to anyone regardless of HIV status, click here.

Where do we meet?

Directions to the Cal Adventures/Berkeley Marina: From San Francisco, go over the Bay Bridge and take I-80 East. Take the Powell Street exit (the 1st exit from the bridge). Turn left under the freeway and then right onto Frontage Rd. Follow Frontage Road to University Ave. Turn left on University and left again at the fork. The Cal Adventures parking lot is one mile on the left. From the north, exit at University Ave. and follow the signs to the Berkeley Marina. Look for signs to Cal Adventures.

Directions to the UC Aquatic Center/Berkeley Marina by public transportation: Take BART to the Berkeley BART Station. (It's at the corner of Center and Shattuck). Bus 51M leaves the intersection of Center and Shattuck every 20 minutes. Take 51M and ask if the driver will let you off at Cal Adventures/the Cal Sailing Club. After you cross the freeway, begin looking for a small Healing Waters sign on your left. This is where you need to get off. If you can't get off there, get off at the last stop and walk to where you saw the sign (it's not far).
